Registered for SSTR2025

On February 23, 2025, at 6:37 AM—the very moment registration opened—I successfully signed up for SSTR2025. As I plan my route for this year’s event, I find it helpful to look back on my first SSTR experience in 2023.

I hope this reflection offers insights for fellow riders, whether you’re participating this year or considering joining in the future.

What Is SSTR?

SSTR stands for “Sunrise Sunset Touring Rally,” a motorcycle event conceived by renowned adventurer Shinji Kazama. Participants start from a self-chosen point on Japan’s eastern coast at sunrise and aim to reach the goal at Chirihama Nagisa Driveway on the Sea of Japan by sunset.

Rather than a race, SSTR is a personal challenge where riders follow shared rules and pursue individual themes. Along the way, riders collect points by stopping at designated locations like highway service areas and roadside stations. To successfully complete the rally, participants must gather at least 15 points, including visits to specific “designated roadside stations” and, when applicable, “designated reconstruction support points.” A GPS-linked smartphone app simplifies point tracking and route management.

My 2023 Route

For my inaugural SSTR in 2023, I opted for a straightforward route to ensure a manageable experience:

  • Departed from Tokyo Bay area
  • Took the Shuto Expressway to the Chuo Expressway toward Nagano
  • Continued north on the Nagano Expressway
  • Exited at Toyoshina IC, then traveled via national and prefectural roads to Itoigawa
  • Joined the Hokuriku Expressway to Toyama
  • Exited at Takaoka IC and proceeded on local roads to Chirihama Nagisa Driveway

This route spanned approximately 500 km, allowing for flexibility in case of adverse weather. I planned key checkpoints and estimated arrival times, adjusting breaks and meals accordingly. Ultimately, I reached the goal ahead of schedule and enjoyed the event festivities. Upon completion, I received a certificate displaying my GPS-tracked route, providing a tangible sense of accomplishment.

Lessons Learned

Reflecting on my 2023 experience, here are some takeaways:

1. Temperature Variations:

I encountered significant temperature drops, notably near Hara PA on the Chuo Expressway and in tunnels transitioning from Nagano to Niigata. Packing thermal layers, such as a down inner jacket, is advisable.

2. Fatigue Management:

Starting around 4:30 AM after a 3:00 AM wake-up led to inevitable fatigue. I took a nap at a Hokuriku Expressway service area. Planning for rest breaks, including potential naps, is crucial.

3. Kickstand Support:

The goal area is a sandy beach, making a kickstand plate essential to prevent the bike from sinking. Even a makeshift solution like a flattened plastic bottle can suffice.

Plans for 2025

This year, I plan to traverse Gifu Prefecture via national roads en route to Toyama. Starting again from Tokyo Bay, I’ll take the Chuo Expressway toward Gifu before switching to local roads. Given the mountainous terrain, I’ll be prepared for temperature fluctuations and intend to measure actual temperatures during the ride, sharing those insights in a future post.

Final Thoughts

SSTR offers a unique opportunity to experience Japan’s landscapes from sunrise to sunset. Success hinges on thoughtful route planning and point collection strategies. For those embarking on this journey, embracing a personal theme and meticulous preparation can enhance the adventure. Wishing all participants a safe and memorable ride!
